Answer engine optimization (AEO)

AEO is the practice of making content easier for search engines and AI assistants to use when answering a question.

What it means

Answer engine optimization focuses on direct answers, such as featured snippets, voice responses, and AI-generated answers. It often involves answering common questions clearly, organizing information with descriptive headings, and supporting claims with reliable sources.

Example

An accounting firm answers “What records should I bring to a tax appointment?” with a short checklist, followed by details for different types of clients. A reader can find the answer without sorting through a sales pitch.

Keep in mind

AEO overlaps with SEO and GEO. Clear answers can help readers and automated systems understand a page, but they do not guarantee that a platform will feature it.
