Generative engine optimization (GEO)

GEO is the practice of improving how a business or its content appears in AI-generated answers.

What it means

Generative engine optimization focuses on visibility in tools such as ChatGPT and Google’s AI search features. The goal is for relevant answers to mention your business accurately or cite your content as a source. Useful original information, clear explanations, and a consistent business presence are common areas of work.

Example

A software company publishes a detailed comparison of the problems its product solves, including original examples. It then checks relevant AI answers to see whether the company is mentioned and whether the information is accurate.

Keep in mind

A brand mention, a linked citation, and a website visit are different outcomes. Track them separately because an answer can mention a business without sending anyone to its website.
